Hindi Font Generator
This Hindi font generator renders Devanagari text in eight free typefaces — condensed poster displays, brush handwriting, a high-contrast face, and clean book serifs and sans. Type in Hindi or paste a phrase, and every style redraws as you type. Export the one you like as a PNG at any size, or an SVG with the font embedded so the lettering survives anywhere.

Devanagari Is One Script Serving Many Languages
Devanagari is not the Hindi alphabet — it is the writing system used to write Hindi, Marathi, Nepali, Sanskrit, Konkani, Maithili, Bhojpuri and dozens of other languages, and it is the single most widely used script across northern South Asia. The Unicode block runs from U+0900 to U+097F and assigns 128 characters, which is more than the Latin block, because a script built for the sounds of Sanskrit has to carry letters that English never needed.
It is an abugida rather than an alphabet. Every consonant letter already contains a built-in vowel, the short schwa sound written as "a" in most romanisations. To change that vowel you add a sign called a matra: क is "ka", कि is "ki", कु is "ku". Some matras sit below, some above, some wrap the letter, and a few move to the left of the consonant they are pronounced after — so the written order and the spoken order genuinely differ. That reordering is one reason Devanagari cannot be handled by a simple letter-by-letter font.
The second reason is conjuncts. When two consonants meet without a vowel between them, they fuse into a combined letter — क्ष, त्र, श्र — and there are hundreds of these. A virama, the halant mark ्, is what tells the engine "kill the inherent vowel here and join". Whether you see a true fused conjunct or a consonant with a visible halant hanging under it depends on the font, so the same word can look noticeably different between faces.
What ties the family together visually is the śirorekhā — the horizontal headline that runs along the top of a line of text. It is not drawn separately; it emerges because the letterforms are designed to touch along the top. That line is the fastest way to tell Devanagari and its close relatives apart at a glance, and it is also the feature that Gujarati, covered on the sister page, deliberately drops.
Where to Use Hindi Font Text
-
Instagram & WhatsApp Bios. A short Hindi line in a display face makes a profile read as deliberately styled rather than default. Paste the characters, or export an image if you need the exact typeface to survive.
-
Posters, Reels Covers and Thumbnails. Teko's condensed height and Rozha One's sharp contrast are built for large display type. Export a PNG with transparent background and drop it straight over your artwork.
-
Wedding Cards and Invitations. Names and shlokas in a serif Devanagari read formal; brush faces read personal and handwritten. SVG export keeps the lettering crisp at print resolution.
-
Sanskrit and Mantra Text. Long vowel marks, anusvara and conjunct stacks need vertical room. Noto Serif Devanagari and Mukta give the marks space to sit without colliding — proofread against a known-correct source.
-
Notes, Captions and Chat. For anything you actually want searchable and readable on someone else's device, use the plain characters rather than an image. Copy from any card and paste as text.

How to Use It
Type Devanagari into the box at the top, or paste text you already have, and all eight styles update live. Click any card to copy the plain characters; use the PNG and SVG buttons to export the lettering as an image with your own size and colour. Nothing leaves your device.
You need Devanagari characters to start with — this is a font previewer, not a translator. To type Hindi, add a Hindi keyboard on your phone or computer. iPhone and Android both ship one, and both offer a phonetic option: you keep typing Latin letters and the keyboard converts them to Devanagari as you go, which is how most people actually type Hindi on a phone. That conversion happens in the keyboard, before the text reaches any app — which is why a website cannot honestly claim to do it for you.
Which of the Eight Faces to Pick
Grouped by what they are for.
-
Teko. Tall, narrow, hard-edged. The condensed poster look — film titles, sports graphics, anything that has to fit a lot of word into a small width.
-
Rozha One. Very high contrast, hairline strokes against heavy ones. Elegant and loud at the same time; strictly a display face, never body copy.
-
Yatra One. An offbeat display face with uneven, characterful letterforms. Good for a brand voice that should feel handmade rather than corporate.
-
Baloo 2. Heavy, rounded and friendly. The obvious choice for kids' content, games, memes and anything that should not look serious.
-
Tillana. A brush handwriting face — loose, energetic, visibly written by hand. Use it when you want the line to sound like a person.
-
Kalam. Marker handwriting, calmer than Tillana and more legible at small sizes. Works for captions, notes and informal posts.
-
Mukta. A clean contemporary sans from an Indian type foundry, designed for screens. The safe default for interface text and long passages.
-
Noto Serif Devanagari. A solid book serif with wide character coverage. Choose it for print-like formality, and for Sanskrit text with heavy diacritic loads.
Why Your Hindi Text Sometimes Renders Wrong
Devanagari needs a real text-shaping engine, and where one is missing you see the failure immediately: matras floating in the wrong place, halants left visible instead of forming conjuncts, or the whole word looking broken. Modern browsers, phones and operating systems all shape correctly, so this is mostly a problem in older games, custom app text fields, and platforms that sanitize characters.
The other common complaint is that the same text looks different on two devices. That is not a bug — it is font substitution. If your phone offers a Hindi keyboard but the receiving app has no Devanagari font installed, the operating system falls back to whatever it does have, or to boxes. This is the single strongest argument for exporting an image when the appearance matters.
One more: Devanagari is written left to right, so unlike Arabic there is no bidirectional problem when you mix it with English. A line like "नमस्ते world" sits in the order you typed it. If you are moving between the Hindi and Arabic pages of this site, that is the difference that will bite you.
What This Tool Does Not Do
No English-to-Hindi conversion. Transliteration is a mapping with genuine ambiguity — several Devanagari letters collapse onto the same Latin character, and the retrograde direction is not deterministic — so a site that claims to do it is guessing at your words. Type or paste Devanagari.
No Gujarati, Bengali, Gurmukhi, Tamil, Telugu or Kannada. These are separate scripts with their own Unicode blocks and their own fonts; a Devanagari face simply has no letters in those ranges, and pasting them here gives you boxes or fallback glyphs. Gujarati and Sinhala each have their own page on this site.
No Marathi- or Sanskrit-specific guarantees. Both are written in Devanagari, and most faces here cover the core letters, but Marathi relies on nukta forms like ड़ and ढ़ and Sanskrit uses vowels like ऋ that a few display faces omit. If your text depends on those, read the preview closely before exporting — a missing letter shows up as a mismatched glyph from another font, and it is easy to miss.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this Hindi font generator free to use commercially?
Yes. All eight faces are open-licensed under the SIL Open Font License or the Apache License, so exported images can be used in client work, products, print and social posts without a fee. Read the licence of the specific face you ship, but none of them restrict commercial use.
Can I type English and get Hindi automatically?
Not here — that is transliteration, and it belongs in your keyboard, not in a font. Both iPhone and Android offer a Hindi phonetic keyboard: you type Latin letters and they are converted to Devanagari before the text reaches any app. Add one under keyboard settings, then type into the box on this page.
What is the difference between Devanagari and Hindi?
Hindi is a language; Devanagari is the script it is written in. The same script writes Marathi, Nepali, Sanskrit, Konkani and many other languages, which is why a "Hindi font" is more accurately called a Devanagari font — and why one face can serve all of them.
Why do the vowel signs appear in the wrong place?
Usually a shaping failure. Devanagari matras are typed after the consonant but some render before it, and conjunct consonants have to be assembled by a text-shaping engine. Where that engine is missing or the characters were stored pre-decomposed, the marks land where you typed them instead of where they belong. Modern browsers handle it correctly; older games and custom app fields often do not.
Will my Hindi bio look the same on everyone's phone?
No. The characters are portable, but the typeface is chosen by the receiving device. Your Instagram bio in Devanagari renders in whatever Hindi font that phone has, not in the face you had in mind. If the exact lettering matters, export it as an image from this page.
Which font is best for Sanskrit shlokas?
Noto Serif Devanagari or Mukta. Both give the mātrās, anusvāra and visarga room to sit cleanly, and both carry the long-vowel and vocalic letters Sanskrit needs that some display faces drop. Set it larger than feels necessary and proofread against a reliable edition.
Does Devanagari have its own numerals?
Yes — ०१२३४५६७८९ at U+0966. In practice they are uncommon in everyday Hindi, where the Western digits 0-9 are standard, and you will see both in the same document. Using Devanagari digits is a stylistic choice, and not every display face includes them.
Can I use these fonts for Marathi or Nepali too?
Mostly yes, since all three languages use Devanagari. The exceptions are specific letters: Marathi relies on nukta forms ड़ ढ़, and Nepali has its own conventions. Check the preview closely for those characters rather than assuming coverage.
Why is there no headline line on some letters?
The śirorekhā is not drawn as a separate stroke — it appears because the letterforms are shaped to meet along the top. Display faces sometimes break the line deliberately for a lighter or more open look, and handwriting faces like Tillana and Kalam leave it broken the way a pen would. That is a design decision, not a rendering fault.
